3. The complexity of MySQL Migration

   Last month, one of my acquaintances, who happens to work as a sysadmin at a small logistics company, got in touch with me in a panic. One of their on-premise SQL servers was nearing the end of its lifecycle, and the company had decided to migrate to Azure SQL. He thought it was going to be a routine task to complete over the weekend. Instead, the migration took five days, involved numerous failed restores, and a few collation-related dramas. He had already attempted three different migration “hacks” that supposedly required no third-party software and ended up with two test databases in disarray before he decided to ask for help.

   Free / Manual Migration: Step-by-Step

   If you are determined to use a free but legitimate method to migrate your database to a new server, here is what you would typically have to do:

   1. Create a backup of the database that you wish to migrate. To do this, open SSMS, right-click the database, choose Tasks > Backup, and store the .bak file in the location of your choice.

   2. Transfer the .bak file to the destination server (or blob storage, in the case of migrating to Azure).

   3. Restore the database on the target server. Right-click Databases, choose Restore Database, and follow the wizard’s instructions. If you are restoring an MSSQL database to Azure SQL, you may want to use SqlPackage.exe (.bak file format is not supported by Azure). Alternatively, you can use the “Deploy Database to Microsoft Azure SQL Database” wizard in SSMS.

   4. Resolve any collation or schema-related issues. This step can be particularly time-consuming, as you will have to make sure that all users, logins, and permissions are correctly restored on the target server.

   5. Migrate data: you may either restore the database using the .bak/.bacpac file or use the Import/Export Wizard / bcp utility if you are using different versions of SQL Server. This step can take a lot of time, especially for large databases.

   6. Point your applications to the new database instance. Make sure to update all connection strings and firewall settings.

   Common Migration Pitfalls

   I asked my friend what went wrong during the migration, and he had quite a list:

   • MDF/NDF file issues: if the source database was faulty, any attempt to restore it on a new server would fail.

   • Version mismatches: he initially tried to restore the backup in SQL Server 2012 after taking it from SQL Server 2019.

   • Collation mismatches: the collation of the source and destination servers did not match, which resulted in many join-related errors.

   • Orphaned users: some users were absent on the destination server, while others had different permissions.

   • Absent objects: some functions, triggers, and foreign keys were lost during the migration.

   • Cross-database querying: Azure SQL does not allow cross-database queries and has a limited set of stored procedures and functions compared to on-premises SQL Server.

   • Large payloads: migrating large databases to Azure SQL often results in timeout errors.

   • Tools’ shortcomings: the tools that he used did not have an option to skip corrupt pages during the restoration process.

   • Time constraints: the weekend was not the best time to schedule a migration, especially since it involved databases with critical data.

   After helping my friend recover two test databases, I decided to investigate the issue further. It seems that many database administrators have similar stories and are now opting for a commercial solution called Kernel Migration for SQL Server. One of the main advantages of this tool is that it can be used to migrate both healthy and corrupt databases – all with minimal downtime. Users can preview all database objects before migrate SQL server database and transfer data directly to Azure SQL, Amazon RDS, or a local instance of SQL Server. All in all, Kernel Migration for SQL Server can be a great alternative to manual migration for companies that want to avoid the risks involved in using third-party tools.

4. Send invoice and all tax-related correspondence to the person noted as the primary contact.

   Somewhere earlier in the tax-preparation process, notify the primary contact
   1) the invoice will be sent via email.
   2) tax returns will not be sent until invoice is paid.
   3) explain what the "sales" means on the invoice.

5. Allow more information regarding customers to be saved to each individual customer.

   When inputting data for a new customer or even editing an existing customers information, it would make QBO a much more desireable product if there was the option to set specific hourly labor rates for each individual customer. I do not have 1 set hourly rate, it changes depending on the situation (distance, condition of equipment, how much time that location will require) and it makes the process of trying to get invoices sent out quickly extremely troublesome with the need to go find the agreement with the customer to verify pricing.

   I could create a service for each customer use the customer's name as the name of the service but the issue with that is there are 2 different overtime rates (one is a standard OT, and the other is Sundays and Holidays) for hours worked taking calls during non-business hours. If there was a way to set these prices during the "onboarding" process and enter it in with the billing information for the customer it would make this product irreplaceable. Having to find a "service product" and creat a line item for it is a hassle that could be done by just having "labor" (or "OT Labor" or "OT/Holiday Labor") as an option that prefills in the # saved to the customer profile when onboarding.
   Along the same lines as I just mentioned, there are inspections and tests that happen annually at a conctractually listed and agreed upon price that would also be beneficial to have the ability to set.

   I was even thinking it could make creating recurring invoice templates easier as well if prices were already there it would just be frequency and any additional products to worry about.

7. make it easier to get a copy of an invoice that shows it was paid

   After I pay an invoice, there is a link to download a copy of the invoice. But that pdf copy doesn't show the invoice was paid! If I go back to the "payment request" email and click on "review and pay," that will take me to a page saying the invoice was paid and will let me download a proper invoice saying "PAID." But those extra steps shouldn't be necessary, especially because most of the time I do that I'm forced to log in again -- including getting a 2FA code from my authenticator app and submitting it. (That's another problem: Why can't my login and/or my 2FA verification last more than a few minutes?)

9. Make it more difficult to make a double payment

   Needed to pay a large invoice, so was required to split total into 2 equal payments. It only took 1 click to process second payment. Could see how you could make that 2nd payment in error. I believe you are not able to pay more than invoice.

    It would be much better for us to have an area that can be filled in so we know (e,g, in my case) which property had this plumbing done and the service date. If that field(s) could be on the invoice, and then transferred to the 'PAID' receipt, it would help so much. I just paid a $300 invoice and all that was on it was an 'authorization ID' plus the amount I paid, and the due date. So why not have an area for the invoice number, the date of service and a brief description of where the work was done or what product was purchased?     Not confident after paying, need a home button for customers to sign out of account, need a more secure sight to pay.. log in and log out?
