How tall are wind turbines, and why does height matter?
Modern wind turbines are tall structures, often ranging between 80 to 120 meters (260–390 feet) for the tower, with blades that can extend another 40–60 meters. This means the tip of a blade at its highest point can reach over 180 meters (590 feet). Some of the latest offshore turbines are even taller, exceeding 200 meters in total height.
The reason for such height is simple: the higher you go, the stronger and steadier the wind. Near the ground, wind is slowed down by trees, buildings, and terrain. At higher altitudes, these obstacles have less effect, so wind flows faster and more consistently. Since the power output of a wind turbine increases with the cube of wind speed, even a small increase in wind speed at greater height results in much more electricity.
Additionally, taller turbines can support longer blades. Longer blades sweep a larger area, capturing more wind energy. This improves efficiency and lowers the cost of power per unit.
