What materials cut turbine blade weight being strong?
Wind turbine blades need to be lightweight and strong at the same time. To achieve this, engineers use advanced materials instead of regular metals or wood. The most common materials used are composites, especially fiberglass and carbon fiber.
Fiberglass is widely used because it’s light, strong, and more affordable. It is made by weaving glass fibers into a fabric and adding a special resin to make it hard and durable. Fiberglass blades are reliable and work well in most wind conditions.
Carbon fiber, on the other hand, is even lighter and stronger than fiberglass, but it is more expensive. It’s used in high-performance blades where weight reduction is very important, such as in offshore turbines or large, advanced models.
Some manufacturers also use foam or balsa wood as a core material inside the blade, sandwiched between layers of fiberglass or carbon fiber. This helps reduce weight without losing strength.
These materials help make long blades that can handle strong winds without being too heavy. Lighter blades are not only easier to transport but also help turbines spin more efficiently and last longer.
