Just so that folks are aware, QBO already has 3 custom fields Company > Preferences > Sales Form Entry > Custom Fields.
The Custom fields on the Sales Entry Form are great for the Sales Entry Form but I want the custom fields as used on QB desktop to linked to customer not the transaction. For instance I know how the customer found me (source field with a drop down) and have customer type and a single customer may belong to several types. It is extremely useful.

in QB desktop I have a number of different invoice templates so would choose according to the requirements. For instance I only send my bank details to those who will be paying by bank transfer.

Totally agree. I use customer type to identify groups of customers to whom I may need to send a specific email. Without this I am stuck. A big limitation.

With the May update of QBO, you will be able to search for customers by phone number! Keep an eye on the QBO Blog (http://quickbooks.intuit.com/blog/ for more updates on this!
In Quickbooks desktop I always search by postcode when a customer calls as it confirms their address and avoids issues such as lots of Smiths. Doing by postcode also checks that they have not moved so i am sending items to the right place. I am really shocked it is not there. This makes me seriously consider whether I would move to QBO.
