Just so that folks are aware, QBO already has 3 custom fields Company > Preferences > Sales Form Entry > Custom Fields.nana commented
For a small business owner, this is imperitive. I have mentioned this to half a customer service reps over the past two weeks (as we worked to solve other problems) and not one mentioned to me about the company preferences solution. However, three is FAR to few. Accounting is only half the reason I use Quickbooks--it is important to have one place to keep all the information about a customer. For now my fix will be Excel, but if I find a product that is suited to my business (and there are many) I will leave Quickbooks.

I just used three votes on this idea. It is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE that this data is not being backed up. I will also leave if this is not fixed as data was already lost during the setup. The online version is functioning as a glorified accountant, where the desktop version allows customization that small businesses need to be successful. To quote from the sales page:
"No more back-ups
Never worry about saving your files to an external device. QuickBooks Online works from any computer, on any device."
I thought no more backups meant I didn't have to worry about it (as much). Not that they don't offer it at all. I still plan to save to excel routinely.
