What is the lifespan of a wind turbine?
A typical wind turbine is built to last about 20 to 25 years. During this time, it can generate electricity almost every day, depending on wind conditions. However, regular maintenance is required to keep the machine running efficiently.
The blades, gearbox, and generator are the most critical components. Blades may need repairs due to wear, erosion, or lightning strikes. Gearboxes, which handle heavy loads, are often replaced once or twice during a turbine’s life. Routine inspections and lubrication ensure the mechanical parts stay in good condition.
After 20–25 years, turbines often face reduced efficiency and higher maintenance costs. At this point, operators may choose between three options:
Repowering – upgrading old turbines with new blades, towers, or generators to extend their life.
Decommissioning – dismantling and recycling the turbine parts.
Replacement – removing the old turbine and installing a new, larger, more efficient model.
Interestingly, many old turbines are being replaced with fewer but larger models that produce more power. This makes wind farms more efficient and cost-effective without needing extra land.
