QBO Needs a Downloadable Backup and Restore!
We just found out that Intuit does not keep backups of our accounting data online so that we could not restore our company to a previous point like we used to be able to do in the desktop version. We find this unacceptable and at this time we would not recommend QBO to anybody based on this major flaw.
These are only a few reasons why restoring to a previous point may be necessary:
1) Angry employee changes/deletes transactions maliciously before quitting
2) New bookkeeper decides to rename all the accounts to a system they like but that confuses the rest of the company and transactions are placed in wrong places
3) Employee decides to go through all transactions of a certain type and change them, then realizing it was a mistake after having spent days working on it
I've seen all of these myself over the years. How many other scenarios there are where you wish you had a backup to restore to?
We've been using QBO for a couple years and I have to say I always assumed there would be backups of my data like all good cloud services provide. I've spoken to several support reps about backing up my data and they tell me that Intuit is not responsible for my data and I would have to recreate all transactions if something happened to them. I've tried using the Export feature to create backups but it's cumbersome since it requires Internet Explorer. How is this not a feature already? With the desktop version we'd backup every few times we closed the company files. If you don't want to store the multiple backups, how about giving us a single click option to download a backup, plus a feature to restore to a backup from file? Or even better a way to simply roll back to a previous date.
QBO needs to implement a downloadable backup. The backups that Intuit makes and keeps are just for the sake of maintaining the current data. But there's no historical backup you can reference if you want to roll your file back to a previous version, e.g. after you made many significant changes and need to undo them. This is a major issue and might force us to leave the QBO product.
I am so glad I stumbled on to this site. Have been flirting with idea of QBO for awhile for a variety of reasons but it seems to be missing some very scary fundamentals like this and others. I will no longer be considering it until I am confident it is a more mature product. Can anyone suggest a viable cloud-based alternative to consider?
maybe two years ago before the "update" you may have been able to back up info. but since that horrible day which it probably was an irrate employee and they lost most of the software and needed it to be reconfigured ...and unfortunately used a country that does not understand our banking system. you will see that items that were intuitive now take many more
keystrokes than before....and that is the simplist problems....no back up even I as a non accountant knows that the measure is vitally important.
This is a must have and would help QB distance itself from the competition which has similar issues. How can any user find it acceptable not to have the ability to physically backup and the ability to archive and restore?
This is a major problem. We just had an issue today that QBO lost all our reconciliation reports for last year! There is no way even if you export to a computer file or USB to restore that data from what I researched & talking to Customer service. They are trying with a Technician to see if they can find it & restore that part.

While Safetynet is a "good idea" it is NOT fully matured and looks like it won't be for a while unfortunately. According to the developer, it does NOT backup/restore everything. See https://safetynet.getjobber.com/supported and you will find that NOT everything is restorable. Such as budgets, tax agencies, deposits. I'm not sure why except to think that QBO doesn't allow it. Which doesn't make sense.
I think Safetynet has a great opportunity and I've offered to be a "test" but the developer is still in testing. I have clients that would die for this but I'm still waiting.
Hopefully, the developer would see our interest and get in touch with us. Intuit doesn't seem to think it's important.
Have you seen the 3rd party add on called Safety net?
SafetyNet uses the QuickBooks Online API to create Archives of your QBO companies. At any point in the future you can then restore your QBO company to look exactly as it did when the Archive was created.

I really really really would feel much much much more comfortable with your cloud version of quick books if there was a way I could back the data up to my hard drive on my computer. Then if I hire an IDIOT and they totally screwed up my data file i could restore yesterday and just re enter the data and in years past have had to do this several times. Note that I started using Quickbooks when version 5 came out. I am a CPA and I am trying this on two of my companies that I own personally but until I can do a backup to my computer or your cloud I will not be utilizing the cloud software you have for other clients ( just with me that would mean over 100 new accounts on your cloud software) My number is 479-466-2530 and name is John Dunn if someone wanted to talk about this.

Hi guys, Here's what you need to offer. An option for an administrator user to store up to 5 snapshots of the data backup and the snapshots will be no older than 3 months old as we need to be aware that the QB Online products i constantly evolving and new database fields/tables are being added at all times. If this can't be done for the reason above, at least give the users the ability to store some snapshots for a couple of days. Only Admin user can restore and the action is written to a logfile. Downloading backups is useless as it only needs to be re-uploaded if ever it needs to be restored. Fully online is the only way to go !!
I totally agree! After adding Payroll services, QB deleted all of the notes we previously had in our employee files. No way to get it back because THERE ARE NO BACKUPS! And what if I decide, because of this or many other reasons, that a company I am working on would be safer and better on the older and better computer version. I can't take it with me!!??!! This is crazy! I have used QB since 1995 ish when it was DOS! I have dealt with a lot of growing pains with y'all over the years.... This is totally unacceptable!
This is extremely important and business have to do this regularly. Because so many things in quick book cannot be undone, for example, merging accounts etc. And especially when you hire a new accountant, you definitely don't want her to be able to mess up years of records.

REALLY?! The main reason we switched to the QBonline version is for backup safety!
This is critically important if there are several users, some which may make monuments mistakes like uploading bank statements several times, or are disgruntled as mentioned above. This is a very important function, one that is so critical I am now having doubts about continuing with QB unfortunately.

+1 - absolutely essential.
I just tried out the PayPal Sync app and it pulled in all of my hundreds of transactions directly to the register in a way I didn't like. No way to roll back to a backup after trying something experimental that might not work like that.
The only way I could find to truly "undo" what had been done was to use a mouse movement macro recorder to delete each transaction one by one.
You need a backup for quickbooks online. I want to try adding online banking, but I am scared it will go poorly, and then there is no way to reverse it without doing everything manually.

The inability to backup your company data is unheard of. I wish I would have known this prior to moving from QBDT. The fact that this issue has not been reviewed since 7/15 is even more ridiculous. Hugely disappointed and will be looking into a different product asap!

I have a smoldering concern in the back of my mind while making each and every entry into QBO: What the heck would I do if Quickbooks were to lose my company data for whatever reason? (It could happen. Don't kid yourself) It is your DUTY to provide a method of data backup to each and every customer you have. Period.
The ability to save all of my data offline. Not use your service offline just save my data.

I had a long "chat" with tech support today and offered my suggestions and "outrage" that this has yet to be implemented. May I suggest if all of us do the same we may get faster results. Here's why:
1.- When I pointed this out to tech support this morning, at least the person that I brought this up with was "surprised" at what a good idea this was. Although they may tell us to put this feedback in, I don't get the impression they read it.
2.- Supposedly engineers monitor this "feedback" but as demonstrated by this thread, there is nary a reply from any engineer. If they read it, they do it silently. We need to make noise.
3.- The idea of "exporting" to CSV files, while helpful, is not the scope or purpose of backups. The original author makes the point about angry employees, accidental changes or big mistakes. Archival backups give us that safety net. CSV files ONLY help if we plan to "manually" reenter or if we just want to say we have an outside dataset. Really not too convenient.
4.- The third party app suggested here is promising but lacking. It is NOT a complete backup. Some items are missing. If we want a backup, it should be complete.
I explained this to the tech support agent and he agreed and then sent my comments along with all the comments here posted. IT WOULD HELP IF EACH OF YOU GET ON CHAT AND DO THE SAME. Refer to this feedback and give the agent the link in the URL. (See above). Press them on the need for this.
Let's work together and press hard on tech support to get engineering to look at this and implement it promptly. I have offered to be a test customer for this. If you do the same, it might help push the issue to the top.
